Targeted criticism black women on air face

Updated: Dec 5, 2019

Pam Oliver is considered a pioneer for women sports broadcasters and has been in the industry for more than 20 years. Even with decades of experience, Oliver has been crucified via the internet for her appearance. In 2014, during an NFC Championship game, a meme about the veteran reporter went viral. Oliver considered the meme showing her photo next to chewbacca a direct attack on her hair choice. During an interview with Philly.com, Oliver said, “You’re out there trying to catch players, get your reports turned around quickly, and I may or may not have time to put on lip gloss or powder my face."

In her time at Fox Sports the veteran reporter also has received negative feedback about her wardrobe choices. In a sit- down interview with The Washington Post Journal in January of 2014, she says she received so much hate from outsiders but always ignored it. Even with Oliver's choice to take the high road she received news from Fox Sports that after 20-years of working for Fox Sport's No. 1 team she would be demoted to No. 2. Then in 2014, Oliver received an even bigger blow to her career when Fox management informed her that they were replacing her with Erin Andrews, the traditional image of women allowed on TV; tall, blonde and preferably blue-eyed. Andrews was 17 years younger than Oliver. "Fox Sports will look radically different in the coming years. I assume that means they want to look younger," Oliver said. Although Oliver didn't believe race was a factor in the decision, those who had watched Oliver thrive for two decades disagreed.
